The Most Dangerous Thing You "Know"

George Bernard Shaw once hit the nail on the head: "The greatest of all intellectual crimes is to believe in something that is not true, and the most dangerous form of ignorance is false knowledge."

Think about that for a second. We’re usually told that not knowing something is the problem. But Shaw argues the opposite: the real danger isn't the empty space where you don't have an answer. The danger is the "fact" you’re carrying around that’s actually dead wrong.

It’s like trying to navigate a new city using a map from 1995. You’re confident, you’re moving fast, and you’re absolutely convinced you’re on the right path—but you’re headed straight for a dead end.

Why We Get Stuck

We all have these "hidden facts" in our lives. They’re the things we assume are true because we heard them once, or because "that’s just how it’s done." We hold onto them because they make us feel safe and certain.

But as your coach, I’m going to challenge you: What are you 100% sure of today that might actually be holding you back?

Growth requires the courage to say, "I might have this wrong." It’s uncomfortable, but it’s the only way to clear the fog and actually see what’s in front of you.

How to Check Your "Map"

You don't need a PhD to get better at this. You just need to get curious about your own certainties. Try these three simple moves this week:

  • Play Devil’s Advocate: When you have a strong opinion, force yourself to argue the exact opposite. If you can’t make a good case for the other side, you don’t really understand the issue—you’re just repeating a script.

  • Check the Source: Where did you actually learn that "truth"? Is it from a reliable, evidence-based source, or just something you picked up in a conversation or a social media feed?

  • Stay Flexible: Treat your beliefs like hypotheses, not like facts carved in stone. If new, better information shows up, be the person who is happy to update their view rather than the person who fights to stay "right."

A quick challenge for you: Think about a major decision you’re making right now. What is the one thing you are most sure of regarding that situation? Now, imagine that specific thing is completely false. If it were wrong, what would you do differently?

Want to keep sharpening your thinking? Here are a few places to get started:

  • Skeptic.com: Great for learning how to spot bad info and think more clearly.

What is one "truth" you’ve been holding onto lately that you’re willing to put to the test?
